Dancing the Delicious Edges of Almost Touch

Two bodies in direct physical touch, negotiating various degrees of density and weight — that’s probably one of the most familiar and most practiced ways of connecting to a dance partner in contact improvisation. As a base to start exploring from, we’ll use basic CI principles: simple yet complex technique-based proposals that involve sharing weight, leaning, and listening, while moving through space and levels.
Once we’ve established a grounded and juicy connection, I’d love to invite more subtle possibilities of touch — where communication becomes more fine and detailed, without necessarily having to be slow or less juicy. Some hands-on work will support our softening — not only on a physical level. Softened bodies and minds are able to sense more, move more connectedly, and become more permeable.
As our awareness heightens, we’ll include even more subtle possibilities of contact. I’m fascinated by the possibilities that open up when we invest in communication on the level of our kinespheres — this wonderful place of almost touch, when we are close to each other and could easily touch physically, but don’t necessarily have to.
There can be a lot of freedom in moving together without physical touch, while still sensing a very clear physical connection to one’s partner. I find that including energetic planes can bring a sense of vulnerability and intimacy, a lot of pleasure, and quite a bit of magic to the dance. And of course, returning to physical touch is always an option. How might our dances change if we move in and out of touch?
