Deep Listening Ready … to be ready … to be ready

Beyond Backspace
24 & 25 February 2024, Studio 2 Mime Centrum Berlin – with Angela-Mara Florant & Dino Spiri

This workshop is an invitation to lean into the unknown, to gently stretch your comfort zone and to possibly discover something new.

The unknown in the dance is often that which we cannot see, that which is not in our field of vision. One metaphor for the unknown is the space behind us, the backspace. We will spend a lot of time getting to know the backspace by bringing attention to our backside and by activating the space behind us. Our backs are huge, they hold a lot of power and support, yet almost everything in our daily lives is about rushing towards something ahead of us. Also while moving, we often are literally ahead of ourselves and it is not infrequently that we lose a sense of connectedness, first of all within our own system, but also with others and in the dance. An orientation backwards opens up a different plane: it is necessary to sense more, prediction doesn’t work as well, something else has to open so we stay available for the dance. This can feel very grounding, new, exciting and satisfying. Can we find comfort and even a sense of safety by letting our backs lead us into movement and touch? What has changed if we orient ourselves towards the front again, including this support?Revisiting some basic elements of Contact Improvisation technique to create a common ground will be part of this workshop. Once we are tuned in we will play with giving up our sense of orientation as we allow ourselves to get lost in upside-down situations. Letting go of the need to control as we practice to dive under our partner to create surprising possibilities for changing levels and little lifts. Finding comfort in discomfort. Trusting ourselves, trusting our partner/s. Releasing into the backspace!

This workshop is for dancers with some previous experience in Contact Improvisation (approximately one year of regular practice). If you are unsure whether this workshop is for you, please check in with us.

Contact Improvisation Winter Intensive with Joerg Hassmann
2-5 January 2024, Somatische Akademie, Berlin

It has been four years since my last Winter Intensive. So much has happened since then. I moved to Australia, Covid came, the Ukraine war, droughts and floods … Global changes have affected my private life more than ever before and accompanied personal shifts.
Maybe different than before. I am longing for stability, change and flow – all of those three 🙂

I love this moment of the year after the intensity of the build up to Christmas and the end of the year before life returns to its usual pace and patterns. A moment to breathe and decompress. A moment to let things sink, to notice where I am, to find ground, to not plan ahead but to see what emerges. I guess that’s what we often do at the beginning of “the underscore”, not often enough in life though. Can I sense the difference between this kind of grounding versus patterns of “holding on”? What do I rely on? Where is trust growing in me?

I am curious about change, hungry for it and scared about it. “The only constant in life is change” says Heraclit. When can I invite it? Open up for it? Navigate myself through it?

Wow, big questions. Flow is not the answer, but it is in my experience an amazing tool to reach a sense of aliveness that softens and opens mind & heart to feel more options.

I’d like to use these big questions for our CI practice, for the somatically fed physicality of it and its technical foundation. We will indulge in the complexity of bodysurfing, and will wonder about how to get into touch and connections with sared weight and also how to leave the physical closeness again. A spice of technical nerdiness will have its moments, trying to figure things out alone and together. And the questions around stability, change and flow will be palpable in our journeys through open dance frames.

I am curious if and how our days of embodiment practice will be fed by our private and global realities and feed back into it.

LEVEL
Intermediate/advanced – people should feel comfortable with navigating themselves through open dance frames and should feel very familiar with CI on a technical level. As a ball figure we imagine a minimum of 3 years of regular practice in CI.

2-5 January 2024
Tuesday-Friday 10-17 (90 min lunch break)
On Wednesday we booked the studio until 8pm to eat and hang out together beyond the dance.

I am happy to be teaching one of the intensives at this year’s Touch & Play gathering in Germany!

Balance – Approaching a moving target
Intensive @Touch & Play
27 Aug- 2 Sep 2023, Nature Community, Schönsee

In order to playfully explore anything beyond or outside one’s own bodily and mental structures, a strong, unshakable connection to oneself is incredibly helpful. If you know how to contact that realm within yourself that is untouchable and where you are always safe, reaching out to others, provoking, inviting, seducing, tickling, touching & playing becomes easy and delightful.

This Contact Improvisation intensive will offer structures and tools to explore learning yourself through sensing yourself. We will practice meditation and take time to slow down, so we can dive deep into sensing and detailed movement. As the body unwinds, your ability to fully taste sensations increases manyfold, your curiosity gets sparked, your range of choices expands. In order to connect to others we will practice unintentional touch. This quality of physical touch is very respectful and creates trust. From this place it is rather easy to find a gateway into anything else – excitement, detail, playfulness… you name it.

CI technique will be our basis and common language to communicate and play with. Revisiting fundamental aspects of CI technique will be part of this intensive.

FLUIDITY & STRUCTURE
CI Spring Intensive with Joerg Hassmann
8-12 May 2023, Eden***** Studios, Berlin

What is it that creates the flow in dancing together, the openness of body and mind to follow the obvious or the unpredictable in each moment?
After 25 years of teaching this dance form, I still feel the mystery and magic around this question. My body knows it through experience. My mind thinks that getting the body in a fluid state is an essential part of the magic. At the same time, we need the embodied knowledge of our bony structure to offer or read support, knowing intuitively when we can trust.
Fluidity and structure feel sometimes very far away from each other – not only in the dance. Whilst acknowledging the weight-bearing potential of our skeleton, we will also explore the elastic nature of our fascia as a support for both fluidity and structure.

Additionally, we will spice up our dancing by daring to go against the flow, inviting challenge & surprise, embracing stuckness as moments to deepen connections, and finding more choices.
Somatic solo and hands-on work will set the ground. And we will dance as much as possible to let the bodies integrate the given material and to allow connections to emerge on all possible levels.

Participants should be quite familiar with Contact Improvisation technique, which will be our common language for this Intensive. In case of doubt, check in with us.

DIFFERENT STATES – CI Workshop
Changing and influencing our perception
24-26 Februar 2023 with Angela-Mara Florant and Dino Spiri

We would like to dedicate this workshop to observing and playing with different states in our dance. States influence our mood, the contact with our dance partner(s), and the quality of the dance. Our individual states have an impact on the group and the space. The more freedom we have to consciously choose our states, the more we can shape our own experience according to our wishes and more consciously effect the common experience of the group.

We will experiment with meditation, very fine and detailed body awareness and touch. We will also dive into playing with speed, manipulation, and tonus modulation. We are interested in opening and expanding the pallet of our possibilities for perception and creation in dance.

Our desire is to co-create a space where everyone can find access to inspired work and learning.
We will revisit CI techniques as our basis and common language to communicate and play with.

DIFFERENT STATES – CI Workshop
